Local communities, especially in Wakefield and the surrounding areas, love to support independent retailers and boutiques, and Small Business Saturday is a great day to celebrate and embrace all things small business!

Small Business Saturday falls on 3^rd December this year and many independent retailers in Wakefield embrace the day, especially the week after Black Friday , which can often be difficult for smaller businesses.

However, whilst Small Business Saturday is a day to appreciate independent retail’s quirks, retailers are constantly having to change all year round to meet the demands of today’s customers (selling online, contactless payments, Apple Pay, gift cards, loyalty schemes etc.) which is often seen by small businesses as difficult to embrace and potentially expensive.

Statement Retail (a sub-brand of local digital agency, Statement) has been working with Origin Naturals, a Horbury-based independent boutique selling ethical and unique products from Indian silver to Fair Trade clothing, to embrace the digital retail revolution ahead of Small Business Saturday. Statement Retail is working closely with the Origin Naturals team to make sure they are prepared to offer customers a personal, small town experience but with high-street technology.

It has been difficult for Origin Naturals to take advantage of natural footfall and window shopping ‘being set in a small town environment at the top of a hill and away from the footfall of the high street’. As a result, keeping engaged with local communities, reaching new customers and fully celebrating days like Small Business Saturday has been their priority.

So after meeting with bank advisors and speaking to local retail technology companies like Statement Retail, Origin Naturals took a leap of faith and invested. The shop found an integrated till system and contactless payments along with a new online store to make sure that they can compete with national retailers and give customers the best of both worlds.

Many retailers will be offering customers deals, competitions and discounts on Small Business Saturday and it is always an exciting opportunity for us all to shop local and show our favourite retailers our support.
